ABOUT PLAYROOM

A small team,
a free place to begin.

Who makes Playroom, how the instruments, lessons, and guides are built, and what the browser can and cannot tell you about your playing.

What Playroom is

Playroom, at playnotelab.com, is a free place to make your first music in a web browser. It offers a virtual piano, a virtual drum kit, and a virtual guitar, 300 short lessons with timing feedback, an online metronome, and a growing set of beginner guides. Everything on the web is free, and nothing requires an account.

The site launched in October 2026. A Playroom app for mobile devices shares the same lesson catalogue, and signed-in progress syncs between the two.

Who makes it

Playroom is built and maintained by a small independent team rather than a large company. The instruments, lessons, guides, and illustrations are made in-house, and the project is funded by optional Premium features in the mobile app, not by advertising on the website.

How the lessons and guides are made

Each of the 300 exercises is an original pattern adapted from standard beginner teaching for its instrument. Lessons record the teaching references they draw on, keep stable identifiers and versions, and are checked automatically for duplicates before they are published. The credits page lists the sampled sounds and typefaces and their licences.

Guides are written for complete beginners, kept to what the browser instruments can actually demonstrate, and checked against the references listed at the end of each article. Every guide shows its publication date and the date of its last substantial revision, and we update guides when the instruments or lessons change.

What the browser can and cannot assess

Playroom measures which note or drum you played and when, compared with the target pattern inside a ±150 ms window. It does not hear you through a microphone, and it does not evaluate physical technique: hand position, fingering, stick grip, pedal control, or tone on an acoustic instrument. Scores describe performance in the browser activity, not certified ability. For technique, pair Playroom with a real instrument and, if possible, a teacher.
