Choose a comfortable tempo
Open the metronome and choose a pace at which the pulse is easy to follow. If the clicks feel rushed, choose a slower setting. There is no single correct beginner tempo; choose one that lets you listen and count clearly.
Give yourself a moment to hear the click before playing. Count “one, two, three, four” in time with four steady beats.
Practice one small pattern
Pick a pattern you already know. On piano, find C–D–E and play one note per click. On guitar, pick the six open strings one per click, then rest for two clicks. On drums, try a kick on counts 1 and 3 and a snare on 2 and 4. Repeat the same pattern and keep your count alongside the clicks.
If you lose the beat, pause and listen again. Start the pattern fresh at the same tempo rather than trying to catch up.
Increase the tempo when ready
When your pattern feels steady over several repeats, nudge the tempo up a little. If the timing becomes uncomfortable, lower it again. A steady, relaxed pattern is more useful practice than forcing speed.
Try the Playroom metronome with a piano, guitar, or drum activity, or begin a piano path, a guitar path, or a drum path.
