LARGHETTO · ONE BEAT EVERY SECOND

60 BPM metronome.

At 60 beats per minute, each beat lasts exactly one second, so the click lines up with a ticking clock. It is the slowest tempo most beginners find comfortable to count along with, and it is the tempo that most Playroom first lessons use.

What 60 BPM is used for

  • Learning the names of notes, strings, or drum pads while you play them
  • Slow practice of any pattern you cannot yet play cleanly
  • Counting out loud: one, two, three, four, with a full second on each number
  • Breathing and relaxation exercises that follow a steady pulse

A practice idea at 60 BPM

Count four clicks before you play anything. Place one note or one drum hit on each click, then try leaving every fourth beat silent. When that feels easy, switch the subdivision to eighth notes and play two even notes per click.

Press Space to start and stop, T to tap a new tempo, and the arrow keys to nudge the speed by one BPM. The routine in how to use a metronome builds on these steps.
